PSAB: Why did you choose the name “Instant” for your band?

Ilmari (Vocals/Bass):  It’s actually pretty funny story. When we actually started this band we also had a female guitarist. In our like, I don’t know, second time we practiced, we started to think about this band’s name. We thought for it for about half of an hour until our guitarist said something along these lines: “Hey, if all our song names also take this long, we will need a lot of instant coffee.” Then I was like: “Hey guys, what about Instant?” Juuso and our guitarist just laughed but accepted the name. So that’s how we chose it.

PSAB: How has the feedback been for your recently released EP Psychotherapy?

Juuso (Drums/Guitar):  The feedback on Psychotherapy has been really great. We have sold almost every physical copy of the album, although I’m definetely not that proud of the mix, or my vocals on Away. We think that after we sell all CD copies of the EP we’ll release the EP on cassette aswell.

PSAB: You’re a two-man band. Why did you choose to do it that way instead of a traditional band route?

Ilmari (Vocals/Bass): Well we’ve actually had two guitarists in our band’s lifetime. First was this female guitarist, Sofia. She was excellent at playing the guitar, but she was not a metal guitarist. She had this blues-sounding guitar and amplifier. Training with Sofia became more boring and boring and boring the more we did it and she started to feel like that also. So one day, Sofia just quitted the band. We were shocked. We thought: “That was it. Instant is dead.” But Juuso asked his friend Niko to join the band and he gladly accepted. Sofia didn’t let us use the songs we made with her so we had to start from scratch. Almost.

We had this one song, “Away”, that was completely made by Juuso. And look at that, you can also find it from Psychotherapy. But back to track, Niko was not as great guitarist as Sofia, but his playing sounded more metal and he had a lot more energy. Niko did one song with us, Severed, which is the other song in our EP. But Niko started getting bored too. He left the band after a month. Unlike Sofia, Niko let us use the song we made with him. He’s a great guy and we wish him only the best. But in that moment we were just furious. Not again. Why couldn’t we find a good guitarist that wanted to stay in band? We didn’t want to quit the band so we just said: “Fuck it, let’s be a two member band”. And that’s a decision I don’t regret. We have more fun playing this way and songs just make themselves.

We might get a guitarist someday, but it’s just only if the guitarist is 100% perfect for our band. As for now, two members is just fine.

PSAB: What is the metal scene like in your area?

Juuso (Drums/Guitar): The metal scene here in Vaasa is sadly pretty poor. Of course there are metalheads in Vaasa, you just gotta look well enough haha.

PSAB: What are three bands that play the most influence on your music?

Ilmari (Vocals/Bass): I think our music doesn’t have that much influence from any band. But if I had to choose, maybe Slayer, Napalm Death and Sepultura. We love those bands, and we took a lot of inspiration especially in singing from them.

PSAB: Do you have any shout outs to give to the readers out there?

Instant: Be sure to check out our music if you’re a fan of death/thrash metal!: Facebook / Bandcamp.
