Interview with AnFallen!

Genre(s): Metalcore
Location: Bismarck

PSAB: Where did the band name “AnFallen” come from exactly?

AF
: Ricky took a German class in high school and really just one day
stumbled upon it in a dictionary.  It’s just a totally brutal word in
the german language, meaning things of the sort, like savage, to
assault, etc.  It has a lot of different uses.  But otherwise, even
though it is german, it just kind of sounds cool too.  Though if people
didn’t know it was german, it is a bit odd.  “An? Fallen? what?”  Though
it’s pronounced On Fallen.
PSAB: Are you working on new material? If so, when can we expect to hear it?

AF
: Yeah we’ve been working on creating our first album for like a good
year now.  Jams aren’t as frequent as we’d like them to be based on how
inconvenient they have to be.  We would have recorded the songs we have
written by now, but we want them all to be recorded in as high quality
as possible, and part of that is in keeping them recorded in the same
place.  We’re moving in literally a month.  If we were to record some
now, and record some afterward, they’d potentially sound a bit different
recording wise, and that doesn’t seem wise.  So our plan is to get all
of our demos done by the fall area, which we would release at least a
few to the public, but then send those off to a more professional studio
to be mixed and mastered, as we don’t want to mess that up.

PSAB: Why did you choose to play the type of music that you do?

AF
: There’s a number of reasons, but one big one is that, even though we
play a rather heavy sort of metal, we do have a strong love for things
like punk and stuff, but its just more fun to play metal.  I’d rather be
trying to shred or doing something challenging on my guitar than just
playing chords, no matter how good it sounds.  However, in saying that,
we’re also going to be a band that has an unusual amount of variety.  We
like a lot of music and it shows.

PSAB: What is the local metal scene like in Bismarck?

AF
: Complete and total crap honestly.  There’s this one band that used to
have a good thing going for them, and they still exist, but they
basically stopped doing anything.  They were a band that people somewhat
flocked to, but the scene died with them.  Not because of them.  Rather
the opposite.  Because the scene they were in died, they aren’t doing
anything.  But it’s sad really.  There’s not really too many bands in
Bismarck at all.  Hence why we are moving.  If a band from Bismarck
wants to make it, they have to leave, and that’s unfortunate.

PSAB: If you had the choice of having any musician featured on one of your tracks. Which musician would that be and why?

AF
: That’s just way too hard a choice, ha ha. Just off the top of my
head I’d say Jeff Loomis because he is a guitar god, but i’m a guitarist
so of course I’d say to have a guitarist.  I think that’d vary for each
band member based on what they play, as that’s typically they’re
biggest interest.  Otherwise, i think it’d be cool to have Tim Mcilrath
of Rise Against sing, or Corpsegrinder of cannibal corpse.  I say both
because I enjoy both and because i feel that saying either would fit is a
testament to how different our music is going to be, for better or
worse.

PSAB: Have anything to say to the readers out there?

AF
: Bacon is amazing, stop running over baby rabbits, but most importantly
hate on bands that just try to capitalize on what is popular.
